Loving Library is inspiring youth to give back in their communities through their love of reading.
According to Maryanne Wolf, literacy scholar and professor of childhood development, deep reading nourishes our capacity for attention, empathy, and insight.
“At a basic brain level, we really do experience the same thing the characters do. We don’t just understand a book—on a neurological level, we live it. When we read fiction, the brain actively simulates the consciousness of another person, including those whom we would never otherwise even imagine knowing. It allows us to try on, for a few moments, what it truly means to be another person.”
Our programs empower the next generation with leadership skills such as public speaking, project management, fundraising and written communication while giving back to underserved communities. Studies have found that universities have begun placing an emphasis on leadership skills in the admission process, and leadership remains a desirable skill in the workplace (Kuhn & Wienberger, 2005).
Each Loving Library Chapter is led by one of our youth Ambassadors, who gains a deep understanding of the community in need and then, curates a tailored list of books, journals and other items to best serve that population.
We have over 16 Loving Library Chapters across the US and abroad–with over 20 Ambassadors who have helped over 16,000 people.
